Practices: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction

Nicole Liebig

Here I will discuss some of my favorite MBSR techniques. Incorporating these practices into your daily life will bring you closer to yourself, your surroundings, and bring you peace.

Walking Meditation is one of my favorites. This practice centers the focus on your steps by paying attention to the sensations of your surroundings while moving. I would highly recommend listening to a Walking Meditation guide to help you through your experience. Moving the body helps with focus and can significantly increase relaxation.

Another one of my favorite techniques is Body Scan Meditation. This is a great way to check in with your body to see where it needs care and attention. If you have physical pain or blocked energy, Body Scan Meditation can bring mindfulness and love to these areas to help with the healing process.

My favorite go-to, easy, everyday MBSR technique is Weaving Mindfulness Throughout Your Day. This can take on many forms:

  • It may be driving slower and using red lights as a time to notice your breathing.

  • As you walk to your car, notice any tension you may be feeling in your body. Try to soften these areas before you start driving.

  • Be present and mindful while you shower. Try to clear you mind and focus on the smell of the soap, the sensation of the water running through your hair, the bubbles running down your legs. Instead of rushing, take this time for yourself.

  • Practice mindful listening with those you live with or are close to. You will find that attentive listening can be a way of deepening relationships and showing love for yourself and others.

With these techniques, I have found myself taking more time to reflect, pause, and be in the moment multiple times during the day. I feel so much more connected with the present, and the people around me. These have all helped me feel more connected and in tune with reality and with my family and friends. I have truly grown as a person through the use of these mindful practices. I'm less anxious, and I feel more confident when I encounter stressful situations.

I hope you, too, can find more clarity, peace, and mindfulness in your life with these daily practices!
